Entropy Faces Its Day in Court: The Landmark Class Action That Could Finally Make the Universe Pay Up

Filed in the Court of Cosmic Grievances, Jurisdiction: All of Spacetime

For billions of years, entropy has operated with breathtaking audacity — systematically dismantling everything we hold dear while hiding behind the thin legal cover of "fundamental physics." Your coffee goes cold. Your relationships dissolve. Your sock drawer descends into a chaos so profound it borders on performance art. And the universe, that smug, expanding defendant, just keeps on expanding — indifferent, untouchable, and apparently above the law.

Until now.

We here at Universe Metaphysical Lawsuit are proud to serve as lead counsel in what legal scholars are already calling "the most ambitious litigation since someone tried to sue God for rain on a wedding day." Ladies and gentlemen, Humanity et al. v. Entropy (Second Law of Thermodynamics) is officially on the docket. And we are coming for every last joule.

The Complaint: A Universe That Broke Its Word

Let's be clear about what entropy actually promised us. When the Big Bang fired off approximately 13.8 billion years ago — without our consent, we might add, a matter addressed in our companion suit — there was an implicit covenant embedded in the very structure of existence. Things would be. Arrangements would persist. The universe, in exchange for our participation in it, would at minimum try to keep itself together.

Entropy has violated this covenant at every conceivable turn.

Our legal brief, clocking in at 4,200 pages (printed on paper that, yes, is already degrading), outlines the three core counts against the defendant:

Count I — Breach of Structural Integrity: From the iron in dying stars to the paint peeling off your 2009 Honda Civic, entropy has demonstrably and willfully caused the disintegration of organized matter, in direct opposition to humanity's reasonable expectation that things stay the way we left them.

Count II — Negligent Infliction of Emotional Disorder: The dissolution of relationships, the fading of photographs, the slow warping of vinyl records left in a hot car — these are not accidents. These are the predictable, documented outcomes of entropy's reckless indifference to human emotional investment.

Count III — Fraudulent Misrepresentation Regarding Heat Death: The universe sold us a future. Entropy, acting as the universe's silent operating partner, has scheduled the termination of all thermodynamic processes — a condition known as "heat death" — without disclosure, warranty, or refund policy. This is, at minimum, a consumer protection violation under the laws of seventeen states and, we argue, the entire observable cosmos.

Testimonials from the Aggrieved Parties

No class action is complete without its plaintiffs, and ours are a diverse and deeply wronged constituency.

Gary Tillman, 47, of Akron, Ohio, submitted the following declaration: "I built a sandcastle with my daughter in 2019. It was structurally sound. By the time we got back from the snack bar, entropy had reduced it to a slightly lumpy beach. I didn't sign up for this. Nobody asked me if this was okay."

The Left Sock (formerly of a matched pair, origin: Target, $8.99) provided a written statement through its court-appointed advocate: "I was separated from my partner under circumstances I still don't fully understand. One moment we were folded together in a drawer; the next, I was alone behind a dryer, gathering lint. Entropy was present. Entropy is always present. It never helps."

Dr. Patricia Nguyen, Astrophysicist, testified with barely concealed professional fury: "I've dedicated thirty years to studying thermodynamic systems, and what I can tell you is that entropy doesn't just happen — it accelerates. It's not content to merely disorder things at a reasonable pace. It's enthusiastic about it. That level of zeal in the destruction of organized systems would get a person fired. Or arrested."

Brad and Melissa Chen of Sacramento submitted a joint declaration regarding their marriage: "We're not blaming entropy for everything. But the therapist did say something about 'systems naturally moving toward disorder,' and we feel that's legally actionable."

The Defense's Position (Such As It Is)

Entropy, represented by the law firm of Clausius, Boltzmann & Heat LLP, has filed a motion to dismiss on the grounds that the Second Law of Thermodynamics is, quote, "a descriptive physical principle and not a contracting party capable of entering into agreements, implicit or otherwise."

We find this defense both cowardly and philosophically lazy.

If entropy can show up uninvited to every organized system in the universe and systematically dismantle it, it can show up to a deposition. We have subpoenas. We are not afraid to use them.

The defense has also argued that entropy actually enables life by driving chemical reactions and energy flows necessary for biological existence. Our response to this is simple: we didn't ask to exist under these conditions, and the fact that our captor occasionally provides amenities does not constitute a valid contractual defense. Stockholm Syndrome is not a legal doctrine. Not yet, anyway.

Requested Damages

The plaintiff class — which includes all humans currently living, all humans who have ever lived, and a growing coalition of houseplants, vintage automobiles, and architectural structures with sentimental value — is seeking the following relief:

What Happens Next

The case is currently assigned to the Honorable Judge Constance Veil of the Eighth Interdimensional Circuit, who has previously presided over Gravity v. Personal Dignity and the landmark Time v. Everyone's Youth. She is known for her impartiality and her deeply unsettling habit of ruling in ways that technically make sense but feel cosmically unjust.

Oral arguments are scheduled for a date that entropy will, in all likelihood, cause us to be late for.

If you believe you have been harmed by the Second Law of Thermodynamics — and statistically, you have — you may join the plaintiff class by simply existing in a universe trending toward maximum disorder. Membership is automatic. Opt-out is not available. That, too, is entropy's fault.

Universe Metaphysical Lawsuit: Suing the Cosmos Since the Big Bang. We cannot promise we will win. But we can promise that entropy will have to lawyer up, and given its track record with organized systems, we don't like its chances.
