The Force Strikes Back: Gravity Files a Counterclaim and Frankly, Its Case Is Airtight

In what legal scholars across at least three dimensions are calling "inevitable," gravity has officially filed a counterclaim against humanity in the ongoing matter of Homo Sapiens v. The Observable Universe, Docket No. 9.8-M/S². The filing, submitted at approximately 9.8 meters per second squared — because of course it was — alleges emotional damages, willful misrepresentation, and a pattern of disrespect so egregious that even the court stenographer reportedly winced.

"My client has been blamed for spilled coffee, failed relationships, and at least one country song," said lead counsel Newton P. Warped, Esq., adjusting his powdered wig in a way that defied several smaller forces. "The psychological toll is incalculable. We're asking the court to finally make humanity answer for what it has done."

Humanity's legal team has yet to issue a formal response, though sources close to the defense confirmed they are "working on it" from a couch, which — notably — gravity is also holding together.

Exhibit A: The Persistent Myth of 'Defying' Gravity

Gravity's first and most emotionally charged grievance concerns the phrase "defying gravity." The complaint dedicates a full forty-seven pages to this, which the filing describes as "an ongoing campaign of rhetorical harassment that borders on coordinated abuse."

Humanity, the counterclaim alleges, has spent centuries celebrating every instance of leaving the ground — trampolines, airplanes, rocket ships, that one Wicked song — as though successfully escaping gravity's influence represents some kind of moral victory. The complaint notes, with what can only be described as wounded dignity, that nobody has ever actually defied gravity. They have merely borrowed energy from other sources to temporarily work against it, and gravity has been gracious enough to wait.

"Gravity always wins," Warped told reporters outside the courthouse, gesturing toward the sky and then, pointedly, back down. "Every single time. It has a perfect record. And yet somehow it's the villain in this story?"

The filing requests that all use of the phrase "defying gravity" be replaced with "temporarily inconveniencing gravity, which remains unbothered and will collect what is owed."

Exhibit B: The Isaac Newton Incident (And Its Lasting Trauma)

Perhaps the most sensitive portion of the counterclaim involves what gravity's attorneys are calling the Apple Incident of 1666. For centuries, humanity has reduced gravity's entire cosmological identity to a piece of fruit falling on a man's head — a simplification so catastrophic that the filing compares it to summarizing the American legal system as "that thing where Judge Judy yells at people."

Gravity, the complaint argues, is responsible for the orbital mechanics of every planet in the solar system, the structural cohesion of stars, the formation of galaxies, and the very reason the universe didn't just immediately explode into a formless void after the Big Bang. And humanity's primary cultural memory of all this? An apple. Possibly apocryphal. Definitely condescending.

The emotional damages sought for the Newton Incident alone are listed as "no less than the gravitational binding energy of one medium-sized spiral galaxy, to be paid in installments."

Exhibit C: Attempted Circumvention Via 'Hacks' and 'Life Tips'

The counterclaim also takes direct aim at the wellness industry. Gravity's legal team has submitted into evidence approximately 14,000 social media posts, YouTube thumbnails, and late-night infomercials promising to help consumers "fight gravity" through the purchase of various creams, devices, and inversion tables.

"My client does not appreciate being positioned as a lifestyle problem to be solved," Warped stated in his opening brief. "Gravity is not a skin condition. It is a fundamental property of mass and spacetime. It cannot be counteracted by a $39.99 serum available in three easy payments."

The filing notes that humanity's obsession with anti-gravity products has caused measurable reputational harm, citing a 2019 consumer survey in which 34 percent of respondents believed gravity was "mostly a suggestion" and could be "managed with the right attitude." Gravity's legal team has marked this survey as Exhibit C and requested it be entered into the record "with extreme prejudice."

Exhibit D: The Existential Dread Problem

In what may be the counterclaim's most philosophically ambitious section, gravity argues that it has been unfairly conscripted into humanity's broader existential crisis. The filing cites hundreds of years of literature, poetry, and late-night dorm room conversations in which gravity serves as a metaphor for depression, inevitability, the crushing weight of societal expectation, and at least one Pink Floyd album.

"Gravity did not consent to becoming a metaphor," the complaint reads. "It was doing its job — holding planets in orbit, preventing the atmosphere from drifting into space, ensuring that when you set your keys down they stay where you put them — and somehow it ended up in a Sylvia Plath poem about despair."

Gravity is seeking what its attorneys describe as "metaphorical relief," specifically a court order requiring humanity to use a different cosmic force for its artistic expressions of hopelessness. Entropy has been suggested as a willing substitute and has reportedly already retained a publicist.

The Defense's Shaky Position

Humanity's defense team faces an uphill battle — one that gravity will, with characteristic patience, ensure they eventually descend. The primary counterargument, that humans have "mostly meant it affectionately," was described by the presiding judge as "the weakest thing I have heard in forty years on the bench, and I once heard someone argue that a stop sign was a 'suggestion.'"

The defense has also floated the theory that because gravity itself is responsible for pulling humans toward the ground in the first place, it bears some liability for the very frustrations it is now complaining about. This argument — known in legal circles as the Bootstrapping Paradox Defense — has been filed under "creative" by the court clerk and is not expected to survive summary judgment.

What Happens If Gravity Wins

Should the court rule in gravity's favor, the implications are staggering. Damages could include mandatory reeducation programs, a global moratorium on the phrase "defying gravity," and — most controversially — a formal public apology to be delivered from the surface of the Earth, which gravity would like the record to reflect it has been holding together this entire time, free of charge, without complaint, for approximately 4.5 billion years.

"My client isn't asking for much," Warped said, as he gathered his briefcase and was, without fanfare, kept firmly on the ground. "Just a little acknowledgment. A little respect. And the gravitational binding energy of one medium-sized spiral galaxy. Non-negotiable on that last one."

The case continues. So does gravity. It always does.

Universe Metaphysical Lawsuit will continue covering this proceeding as documents become available. We have submitted a FOIA request to the spacetime continuum and expect a response in approximately one to seven business eternities.
